Verified Purchase. I bought this book for the purpose of learning how to use Visual Studio VS for developing applications, whether on the desktop or on the web.

I don’t have an extensive background as a programmer mainly just VBA writing in Excel but I knew one could use VS for some professional looking applications and so I bought this book to help get me into the program.

As of today, I’m approximately half-way through reading this and I’m ready to move on to a new text like Murach’s C just purchased because I needed a guide to actually start building something in VS. So here’s my take: this book is basically a good overview of what can be found inside VS and what you can do with the.

NET framework. It has a brief chapter on the basics of C and Visual Basic, but doesn’t take time to explain anything about object-oriented programming; which is fair because that is not really the purpose of this book. Visual Studio and the. NET framework is very broad in terms of what can be developed.

There are whole books devoted to things like ASP. Therefore this book is good for helping someone, like myself who knows nothing about. To be completely frank, I see this book as the cliff notes version of the VS users manual. After this quick read, I don’t know how often I’ll refer back. Although this book is comprehensive and is useful even for experienced. Net developers I was very disappointed to find some of the sample solutions do not build.

I wasted many hours struggling with this. Many of the NuGet packages used are beta and have since been removed completely from Nuget.

I wouldn’t therefore buy this book or any similar book from SAMS unless example solutions are maintained on Github. I would encourage the authors to consider adding the examples to Github and updating them from time to time, I’m sure most of the trouble I’ve had is easily resolved – by the authors.

The build issues were not trivial or obvious and seem to stem from the samples using beta NuGet packages that have since been removed from NuGet, the frustration and time wasting this leads to seriously undermines the efficacy of the book itself, sorry but in this day and age stuff changes so fast that the authors must see the need to at least where reasonable to maintain buildable versions of their samples. This book should be named. If you want a great overview of all the technologies Microsoft and non-Microsoft and how to work with them in Visual Studio , then this is your book.

But it isn’t as in-depth as I would like on anything, not even Visual Studio I learned a lot, it’s a great book for someone like me that is getting back into. NET technologies and wanting to learn all the new technologies and how they fit together, and which are supported by Microsoft. I didn’t until I read this book. However, if you want to go through Visual Studio in-depth, and learn about all the different screens, options, menus, and checkboxes – then buy Professional Visual Studio by Johnson.

I was hoping to learn Visual Studio in-depth before learning each of the technologies, and Professional Visual Studio by Johnson is my only choice as I write this review. But after I read that, then I’m going to read this book again, Microsoft Visual Studio Unleashed, as a great intro to using all the other technologies that I still have to learn.

I really liked it, and found it very interesting. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it really should be renamed to. But still, a great book. Excellent reference book for Microsoft’s latest Windows development tool. For anyone upgrading from Visual Studio to , this is a no brainer. With visual studio Community available as a free download from MS, any developer needs this book. A very good solid book regarding Visual Studio I have been using VS Community Edition for the last 7 years.

As one would expect, a lot has changed over the last 7 years in the Visual Studio environment and it was very usefull to have a guidebook to help navigate the changes. I was specifically interested in the changes in Visual Studio Extensibility and Automation. The chapters on those subjects are well written and helped get me started on upgrading my Add-ins to VS My only real criticism of the book is in the discussion of the various editions of Visual Studio The comparison of the ecitions was well done and the author explained why the book focused on the Professional edition.

Fair enough and reasonable. The book is an excellent purchase if you want a good guide to Visual Studio Highly recommend. An excellent read for all levels of experience. One person found this helpful. Book is very intense. I haven’t figured out how to use Visual Studio to do the programming I want to do yet. This book really opens the door to many of the possibilities Visual Studio. See all reviews.

Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. A good in depth view of Visual Studio This might not be the best book for a beginner to start with, but it is a very good reference to extend your working knowledge. Excellent value and delivered very promptly. Zum Nachschlagen aber auch nicht, da suboptimal strukturiert. Liegt aber vielleicht in der Natur der Sache. Report abuse Translate review to English. This text is completely outdated! Every chapter presented a disappointing experience.

These authors are kidding their audience – so stay away and save a lot of bucks! I decided I didn’t want to help Microsoft by making anything for Win Now they’re even charging to remove ads from the same games they gave us free – presumably not to cover the cost of developing new games.
